These days, people are working longer hours whilst their dogs remain home alone. If you’re in this position, why not employ a dog walker?

Keep your canine friend entertained and stimulated with daily walks and playtimes. This is particularly beneficial for dogs that suffer from separation anxiety or can be destructive, or maybe your neighbors have complained about the constant barking?

By nature, dogs are pack animals and love to have company. As they are incredibly intelligent creatures, dogs can become bored and unhappy when they lack stimulus. Bored dogs may become destructive around the home, causing expensive damage. As a damage-prevention measure, hiring a dog walker can pay off! Additionally, dogs are social creatures, when they go outside with a dog walker, marking territory, sniffing around and meeting up with other people and dogs is an important way for them to interact with the world at large. A good power walk or playtime with safe doggie friends will satisfy your furry friends need for stimulation, companionship and exercise.

Certain breeds require more exercise and mental stimulation than others. But with any breed, regular exercise is a must to prevent the dog from becoming overweight.

Maintaining a healthy pet is much smarter than dealing with the problems that arise from inactivity such as canine disease and obesity. For good health and well-being, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. A regular routine of walking and playtime may be exactly what your dog needs to maintain its health for many years.

When it comes to finding a dog walker, pet sitter or other pet care provider, it can be a bit of a mind-field. Basic things to check for is if they have public liability insurance and if they’re police record checked - both important if you’re going to be letting someone into your home whilst you’re away. It’s also worthwhile checking if they hold and professional / trade qualifications and are members of any recognized pet service industry associations such as ‘Pet Sitters International’ or anzpetsit. Other things to check include business registration details and references from other clients if possible.
